Original picture with inscription: "Picture of the great rabbi… Shaul Hayim Ha-Levi Horowitz, Rabbi of Dubrovna. Founder of Yeshiva Gedola, Talmud Tora and Beit Ha-Talmud of Me'a She'arim. Born in Vilna [1740] to his father… Rabbi Avraham Ha-Levi, and son-in-law of Rabbi David Tevel [author of Nachalat David], Rabbi of Minsk. He was later rabbi of Dubrovna for 18 years, and wrote many books. In 1883 he moved to Jerusalem, and became Rabbi in Me'ah She'arim, and founded Me'ah She'arim Talmud Tora, Yeshiva Gedola and soup kitchen. He labored hard for every holy cause, and was involved in great things in Jerusalem [hinting to his standing at head of Va'ad Mishmeret Ha-Kodesh, founded by Rabbi Yehoshua Leib Diskin and Rabbi Shmuel Salant which fought against the missionaries and representatives of Haskala organizations from Europe. Rabbi Shaul Hayim Horowitz lives a long life and died in 1916, at the age of 96. His books include "Klilat Shaul", "Mitzpe Sha'ul" and more. (Otzar Ha-rabanim 18013, Encyclopedia Le-Toldodot Hakhmei Eretz Yisrael III, 77, see enclosed material).
