Photograph of master of Jewish thought, Rabbi Eliyahu Eliezer Dessler, author of "Mikhtav Me-Eliyahu" (1892-1954), from the period he served as rabbi in London (before holocaust).
In front of picture is a handwritten signed dedication: "To Rabbi Eliyahu Eliezer… a token of love and dedication from myself, Eliyahu Eliezer".
Rabbi E. E. Dessler was born in 1892, was educated in Kelm [Kelme, Lithuania] from his youth until after his marriage to the daughter of Rabbi Nachum Ze'ev Ziv of Kelm. He came to England in 1927, and served for several years as rabbi in north-east London. The picture was given to his relative Mr. E. E. Sokolsky of Vilna, who assisted him in many ways when he arrived in London.
During the Holocaust period, he was among the founders of the rabbinic college of Gateshead, and one of the pioneers of Torah in England as a whole. In 1949 he moved to Bnei Brak and was given the position of spiritual headmaster of Ponivezh Yeshiva there, which he held until his passing in 1954.
His deep discourses, founded on Musar, Kabala and Hassidism, were printed by his students in the 5 volumes of Mikhtav Me-Eliyahu, and in the Sefer Zikaron Mikhtav Me-Eliyahu.
