Marc Sterling was a French painter who was born into a large Jewish family in the Ukrainian town of Pryluky.

Mark Sterlings creativity is characterized by great diversity, he was not limited to one style, constantly changing and experimenting. He worked in various techniques: oil, gouache, drawing, ink, engraving. Several stages of development can be distinguished in Sterlings work: during his studies in Vkhutemais, under the influence of his teacher Volodymyr Tatlin, Sterling is close to constructivism. In the first years in Paris, communicating with such artists as Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, Georges Braque, Metzinger, he worked in the style of synthetic cubism. During the 1930s, Sterlings style became more plastic and lyrical - bouquets of flowers, cages with birds, portraits of daughters, executed in an oneiric-realistic manner. Post-war works bear the stamp of tragedy - they are dark nightmarish visions. From the beginning of the 1950s, new colors and new subjects full of peace and tenderness appear - nudes, portraits. In the last period of the 1960s and 1970s, there is more and more freedom in colors, as well as in the plots: fantastic creatures, fabulous animals, imaginary landscapes bathed in a special poetic atmosphere.
