Official receipt delivered by Joshua Chenkin to Dr. Ticho – with Chenkin's signature in Hebrew and English – 1935.

Official receipt of Joshua Chenkin, given to Dr. Abraham Ticho. The years are written in Chenkin's hand, and at the bottom of the receipt his double signature – in Hebrew and in English. In the name of Dr. Ticho, Aharon Ticho signed.

The receipt was issued for "the third payment on account of Lot 258 in Heftziba" situated in Emek Harod near the Jezreel Valley.

The training farm "Heftziba" was in operation from 1906. The enterprise was initiated by the "madman" none other than Yehoshua Chenkin. Chenkin purchased the land in 1891, and his legendary wife, Olga, visited the desolate site of "nothing but sand and sand" and immediately recalled the biblical verse, "Thou shalt no more be called Forsaken, and thy land shall no more be called Desolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzibah, and thy land Beulah: for the Lord delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married" (Isaiah 62:4).

The legendary Zionist activist Yehoshua Chenkin acquired some 750,000 dunams (!) of land in the Land of Israel, and especially in the Jezreel Valley, for Jewish settlement, out of the 2 million dunams of privately owned land that were in Jewish hands prior to the War of Independence.

Chenkin proved to be a man of talent in the field of land redemption. He was well versed in the Ottoman land law, fluent in the Palestinian Arab patois, familiar with Arab customs, and had extensive connections with landowners. His wife was Olga, to the Be'likind family, a midwife by profession, who delivered, among others, the wives of the Arab landowners.

In 1966, the private archive of Chenkin was burned in a fire at the Beit Zim building in Tel Aviv. Documents from it are rare.

קבלה רשמית של יהושע חנקין, אותה נתן לד"ר אבברהם טיכו. פרטי השנים כתובים בכתב ידו של חנקין, ובתחתית הקבלה חתימתו הכפולה – בעברית ובאנגלית. בשם ד"ר טיכו חתם אהרן טיכו.

הקבלה ניתנה בעד "התשלום השלישי ע"ח [-על חשבון] המגרש מס' 258 בחפציבה" השוכן בעמק חרוד שליד עמק יזרעאל.

חוות ההכשרה "חפציבה" פעלה החל משנת 1906. ראשית המעשה הייתה על ידי ה"משוגע לדבר" הלא הוא יהושע חנקין. חנקין רכש את האדמות בשנת 1891, ורעייתו האגדית, אולגה, ביקרה במקום השומם של "רק חול וחול" סביב ומיד נזכרה בפסוק התנכי "לא יאמר לך עוד עזובה, ולארצך לא יאמר עוד שממה, כי לך ייקרא חפציבה" (ישעיהו ס"ב, ד').

הפעיל הציוני האגדי יהושע חנקין רכש כ-750,000 דונם (!) של קרקעות בארץ ישראל ובמיוחד בעמק יזרעאל, עבור ההתיישבות היהודית, מתוך כ-2 מיליון דונם קרקע פרטית שהיו בבעלות יהודית ערב מלחמת העצמאות.

חנקין התגלה כבעל כישרון בתחום גאולת הקרקע. הוא התמצא היטב בחוק המקרקעין העות'מאני, שלט בעגה הערבית הארץ ישראלית, הכיר את מנהגי הערבים וקשר קשרים ענפים עם בעלי קרקעות. אשתו הייתה אולגה לבית בלקינד, מיילדת במקצועה, שיילדה בין היתר את נשותיהם של בעלי הקרקעות הערביים.

בשנת 1966 נשרף ארכיונו הפרטי של חנקין בשריפה בבית צים בתל אביב. מסמכים ממנו הנם נדירים.
