Letter of the Rabbinate of Egypt, the Gaon Rabbi Mosheh Hai Ben Shimon, Cairo, Nissan, 1922.

A letter in the handwriting and signature of the Gaon Rabbi Mosheh Hai Ben Shimon, written on official letterhead of the Rabbinical Court of Cairo. Signed in his own hand, and sealed with the seal of the Beit Din Tzedek of the Congregation of Baruch Ami.

Rabbi Mosheh Hayyim ben Shimon (1869 – 1925) Chief Rabbi of Egypt. Born in Jerusalem, to Rabbi David ben Shimon, the Dvas"h, author of Tzuf Dvash. Married to Simha, daughter of his elder brother Rabbi Raphael Aharon ben Shimon, who served as Chief Rabbi of Egypt. He served as assistant to his brother-in-law and after the latter moved to the Holy Land, he served as his deputy in the rabbinate and as head of the court in Egypt, a position he held until his passing, in 1925.
He translated the Shulchan Aruch into classical Arabic. He authored the book "Shem Hadash" on the names in Jewish divorce documents. He also authored the two-volume "Kitab al Ahkam al Shariah Falahewal al Shar'iyyah li-l Yahud, " which proves that the laws practiced in Jewish courts in Egypt are based on the Torah and makes them accessible to readers in Arabic.
