Eulogy in the Holy Handwriting of the Tiferes Yisrael

Rabbi Yisrael Lifschitz, Av Beis Din of Danzig

Danzig, 1841
*

A eulogy delivered by Rabbi Yisrael Lifschitz on Taanis Esther 1841, written in his holy handwriting.

Rabbi Yisrael Lifschitz (1782-1860), Av Beis Din of Danzig, authored one of the most fundamental and widely-learned commentaries on Shisha Sidrei Mishnah. Since first appearing in print, 'Tiferes Yisrael' has been printed in most Mishnayos alongside the landmark commentaries of Rabbi Ovadya of Bartenura and the Tosfos Yom Tov. In his foreword to 'Tiferes Yisrael', his son elaborates on his father’s remarkable sanctity, piety and righteousness.

Written in a mixture of Hebrew and Yiddish-German. The first page bears the inscription: "Eulogy for Rabbi Yerucham z"l on Taanis Esther 1841."

Written at the top of each page is the acronym of the words: "Be'ezras HaShem Yisborach, Gal Einai VeAbitah Niflaos MiTorasecha" - With the help of Hashem, open my eyes that I may behold wonders from Your Torah.

The Tiferes Yisrael extensively edited all his writings, and one can see small paper attachments on these pages where the author wrote his corrected text.

Danzig, 1841. Page Count: [4] leaves, comprising [7] written pages.
Size: 11x17 cm. Special leaves with paper attachments by the author. Water stains on margins, new cloth binding.

Provenance: Yerushalayim Shel Zahav (2016)
