Tze'enah U'Re'enah. Sulzbach, 1826. Rare Complete Copy.

Tze'enah U'Re'enah, chamishah chumshei Torah with meggilahs and haftarahs, in Yiddish-Deutch by Rabbi Ya'akov ben Yitzchak Ashkenazi of Yanova. The book is accompanied by beautiful engravings illustrating stories from Tana"ch.

Tze'enah U'Re'enah (Yiddish pronunciation: Tzeneh Reneh) is an extremely important legendary work written in 1590. The root of the name is in Shir HaShirim 3:11 - "Daughters of Tziyon, go out and gaze upon King Solomon." The book is designated for women, which is why it is written in Yiddish. The book is so widely accepted that senior halachic adjudicators such as the author of Turei Zahav and the author of Mishnah Berurah rendered the ruling that reading this work fulfills the obligation of "shnayim mikra v'echad targum." The book was among the most widely distributed in the Jewish world, and was printed in more that 250 (!) editions.

256 leaves. 21 cm; fine condition. Professional restoration to the title page without damage to text. Tiny tear in the top corner of the title page.

The National Library's collection contains two copies of this book, and both are incomplete. Before us is a rare complete copy!
