Mishnat Chachamim. Wandsbek, 1733. First Edition.

Mishnat Chachamim - mussar on the four foundations and eight acquisitions with which the Torah is acquired, as learned from the mishnah in Pirkei Avot, by the gaon Rabbi Moshe Chagiz.

Only Part I was printed of Mishnat Chachamim on 24 virtues of Torah.

Rabbi Moshe Chagiz [1671 – c. 1750] ('המני"ח') was born in Jerusalem to his father Rabbi Ya'akov Chagiz (author of Halachot Ketanot) and received Torah from his grandfather, leader of the rabbis of Jerusalem, Rabbi Moshe Galante (המג"ן). He also authored the responsa Shtei HaLechemLeket HaKemach and many other books. He was a close friend of the Chacham Tzvi and his son Rabbi Ya'akov Emden, and fought a holy war against Sabbateanism which spread in his time. As part of his struggle against Sabbateanism, he sought to forbid study of kabbalah, both in the Land of Israel and abroad. He assisted Rabbi Ya'akov Emden in his battle with the Ramch"al. His letter was the first to ignite the controversy. Over all the years of the dispute, Rabbi Moshe wrote sharp missives in which he demanded the destruction of the Ramch"al's writings and prevention of the distribution of his teachings. The book before us was very beloved amongst rabbinical leaders, and was published in other editions with the approbations of the Divrei Chaim of Sanz and Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac Safrin of Komárno (Chernowitz, 1864).
