Large collection including personal letters of Jewish refugees and documents of various organizations which dealt with assisting Holocaust survivors in Europe. Most of the letters and documents are from 1945-1947.
Including: Letters from Jews who were war refugees wandering in various countries on their way out of the European continent, personal letters between survivors in the Land of Israel to their relatives who were then still abroad, in attempts to locate them and to discuss their situation and how they will get to the Land of Israel, circulars of 'emissaries of the Land in Bucharest' from 1945 documenting attempts to assist refugees to immigrate to the Land of Israel, name lists of 'Ichud' members who were brought to Bucharest and stencil leaves documenting the organization's activities in 1945 [including internal circulars with the movement's principles: 'The conditions of the survivors and the situation of the people in the Land and in exile after the obliteration of European Jewry force the path of unification of national forces ... Ichud sees elimination of the diaspora as a necessary condition for the realization of the Zionist idea ... etc.], stencil printed letters and documents attesting to the activities of HeChalutz [including a printed letter from 6/1/1946 in which the organization turns, in 'a letter to the members' regarding ways of bringing as many refugees as possible to the Land of Israel, letters documenting attempts to assist survivors ['a young lady is in Milan, a native of Krakow ... she obviously wants to immigrate ... these past few months she left Poland and stayed in camps in Austria ...'], various certificates and more.
There are fascinating personal letters in the collection, written by the various refugees to their acquaintances and relatives who survived. Details of the writers were not thoroughly investigated by us.
Provenance: Estate of a Holocaust survivor who was himself active in assisting his fellow survivors.
Various sizes and conditions, overall fine condition.
