Important Collection: [7] Letters of the Gaon and Tzaddik Rabbi Ephraim Yoffen, Rosh Yeshivah of Novhardok

Important Torani-Historic collection including [6] letters from the gaon and tzaddik Rabbi Avraham Yoffen [the Steipler's teacher], son-in-law and successor of the Alter of Novhardok and head of the Beit Yosef-Novhardok yeshivah network. The letters are addressed to gedolei haTorah; an additional letter is addressed to Rabbi Yoffen from Rebbetzin Finkel of the Mir Yeshivah. Jerusalem, 1886-1970.

Details of the letters:

  1. Beautiful and lengthy letter, entirely [over 200 words] handwritten and signed by the gaon Rabbi Avraham Yoffen, regarding his yeshivah, Beit Yosef Novhardok, sent to Rabbi Levi Belitzky. Jerusalem, Friday of Beshalach [no year indicated]. "My friend ... I deliver discourses and lessons in halachah at the above-mentioned study-hall, and baruch Hashem, our institution has become a pilgrimage site in the Holy Land and it engenders kinat sofrim tarbeh Torah u'mussar." 25x17 cm. Entirely in his penmanship. Very fine condition.
  2. Lengthy letter, typewritten and enhanced at the edges with [approximately 60 words] handwritten and signed by the gaon Rabbi Avraham Yoffen. Sent to Rabbi Kirzner, chief rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations, London. Jerusalem, 8 Iyyar, 1967. "As [you] know, I have had the merit,  baruch Hashem, of having baboker zera zar'acha fulfilled through me ..." I find it appropriate to emphasize its simana milta ... Avraham Yoffen." 22x27.5 cm. Typewritten letter with a handwritten postscript and the yeshivah's stamp. Fine condition. Fold mark and perforation in the upper right corner.
  3. Beautiful letter, entirely [approximately 140 words] handwritten and signed by the gaon Rabbi Avraham Yoffen. Letter of recommendation for the Novardok yeshivah's emissary. Sent to Rabbi Dr. Rapoport. Jerusalem, Wednesday of Mishpatim, 1967. "Please listen to the bearer of this letter, my friend, expert in Torah and fear of Heaven, who has disseminated Torah from when he was in Poland. He was educated in the Beit Yosef Yeshivah ... I requested that he travel to the United States on behalf of our institution ... It is one-of-a-kind ... our outlook is to grow to greatness in Torah, mussar, and character refinement." 16x21 cm. Entirely handwritten. Very fine condition.
  4. Letter with important content from the gaon Rabbi Avraham Yoffen to Rabbi Yohonatan Abramowitz, rabbi of Dallas, Texas. Jerusalem, the 35th of Matmonim, 1962. Mentioned here is his tremendous effort to re-inter his father-in-law, the Alter of Novhardok, in Jerusalem, and his ascent to the Holy Land to establish the Novhardok yeshivah in Jerusalem. 22x28 cm. Typewritten [with a handwritten correction in his script]. Fine condition.
  5. Interesting letter of approbation, entirely [approximately 100 words] handwritten and signed by the gaon Rabbi Avraham Yoffen. Approbation for Sefer Dvar HaMelech by the gaon Rabbi Dov Meir Kroizer. Jerusalem, 7 Menachem Av, 1961. It is interesting to discover that for some reason this approbation was not printed in the end in Sefer Dvar HaMelech. 22x25 cm. Entirely in his hand. Fine condition. Tear in the lower margin, far from the text.
  6. Beautiful and lengthy letter, entirely [approximately 200 words] handwritten and signed by the gaon Rabbi Avraham Yoffen, regarding his yeshivah, Beit Yosef-Novhardok. Sent to his relative, Mahara"l Tarshish [son of the Lithuanian wonder-worker Rabbi Zelig Tarshish]. Jerusalem, Tuesday of Mishpatim [no year indicated]. "My friend the renowned gaon and tzaddik R' Binyamin Zilber ... the Chazon I"sh ztz"l called him a tzaddik, and he certainly is." [2] pp, 21x16 cm. Entirely handwritten. Fine condition. Tear in the margins of the fold.
  7. Letter from Rebbetzin Gittel Finkel [wife of the gaon Chaza"p and sister of the gaon Rabbi Chaim Shmuelevitz] to her uncle, the gaon Rabbi Avraham Yoffen and his family. Jerusalem, Sunday of VaYakhel Pekudei [1966] 2/3/66. Entirely in her penmanship. Yiddish. "Thank you very much for your devotion and dedication. May Hashem help you with health and nachas for everyone." [1] airmail letter, 28 cm. Fine condition. Stains and tears in the margins.
