Letter from the Gaon Rabbi Chaim Aryeh HaLevi Ish Horowitz, Av Beit Din of Krakow - Nasi of the First Rabbinic Congress

Historic letter that cannot be underrated, handwritten and signed by the gaon Rabbi Chaim Aryeh HaLevi Ish Horowitz, av beit din of Krakow (successor to Rabbi Shimon Sofer, son of the Chatam Sofer) and author of Shu"t Chayyei Aryeh. Written from the perspective of his role as nasi of the 'First Rabbinical Congress' which took place in Krakow in 1903 and caused a huge controversy, including, inter alia, a discussion on reestablishment of the Sanhedrin. Krakow, 1903.

The letter was sent to the gaon Rabbi Yehoshua Falk [Wolfson], av beit din of Połczyn, and it discusses the renowned rabbinical conference that gathered in Krakow in 1903. This was one of the most famous rabbinical assemblies in Jewish history. It deliberated, inter alia, the reestablishment of the Sanhedrin. This historic convention also gained renown for the shevuat harabbanim - rabbis from all over Europe [listed by name in this letter] gathered in the old synagogue of Krakow, in front of the aron kodesh and declared to the entire world that the whole responsibility of the Christian Church for blood libels is a fabricated falsehood. The av beit din of Krakow wrote about the first Rabbinical Congress on the first page, inter alia mentioning "the printed Pritei Kol" [published by the av beit din of Połczyn about the convention], and other, personal matters [a hetter meah rabbanim for his son]. The final three pages contain a historic list of the fifty rabbis who participated in the famous rabbinical conference in Krakow.

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of the gaon Rabbi Chaim Aryeh HaLevi Ish Horowitz, av beit din of Krakow, and a short discussion of the First Rabbinical Congress.
