Foundational Letter in Divine Service with Blessings for Marriage from the Rosh Yeshivah, Rabbi Shaul Alter

"As I said, there are three expressions ... these are three foundations for divine service: 1) Do not be ashamed before mockers ..." (from the words of this letter)

Lengthy letter handwritten and signed by the rosh yeshivah, the mighty gaon Rabbi Shaul Alter, shlit"a, son of the Admo"r the Pnei Menachem of Gur. Sent to Rabbi Aharon Shapira.

At the beginning of the letter, Rabbi Shaul blesses the addressee upon his daughter's marriage to a talmid chacham, "May Hashem grant this be an everlasting bond, and may their marriage bring pleasure to Hashem."

He then closely examines the spelling of the bride's name, and cites his father, the Admo"r, the Pnei Menachem, saying one does not have to be extremely particular with regards to the ketubah; [the bride's name] can be written as the bride herself signs, or how he (the addressee) writes her name when he mentions her in kvittelach.

The second part of the letter is the presentation of a beautiful insight from Rabbi Shaul about what the gemara says about the sacred tanna Rabbi Yehudah bar Ila'i who would dance in front of the bride, from which he derives a wonderful interpretation for Divine service.

Due to the importance of the matter, we will quote it here in full: "As I said, there are three expressions [אהני לי' שוטיתיה, שטותי' ושוטתי'] these are three foundations for Divine service: 1) Do not be ashamed before mockers, as David HaMelech said: "I shall behave even more humbly than this [אהני לי' שטותיה], 2) consistency and diligence in mitzvahs, which is a tremendous virtue, [אהני לי' שיטתיה] and 3) The essence of the mitzvah of gladdening the bride [שוטיתיה].

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of the rosh yeshivah, the gaon Rabbi Shaul Alter.
