Letter From the Gaon Malkiel Tzvi Tannenbaum, Av Beit Din of Lomza, Author of Divrei Malkiel

Interesting letter handwritten and signed by the sacred gaon Rabbi Malkiel Tzvi HaLevi Tennenbaum, rabbi of Lomza and one of the great halachic responders of his generation. Sent to the ra'ava"d of Białystok, the gaon Rabbi Chaim Naftali Hertz Halperin (son of the 'Oneg Yom Tov'). Lomza, Erev Shavuot 1908.

From this letter, it can be understood that the ra'ava"d of Białystok asked Rabbi Malkiel to recommend his son-in-law for the position of rabbi in a certain city. Rabbi Malkiel replies with this interesting response: "This is surprising to me, I heard that they have [already] taken a rabbi, yet (!) I have fulfilled [your] request and written immediately ... may it serve a purpose ... to the joy of all of our hearts ..."

At the end of his letter, it appears that the ra'ava"d of Białystok had asked a halachic question, to which Rabbi Malkiel responds, "With respect to the other matter that was so definitive, it seems the main thing is to be lenient." Rabbi Malkiel concludes with a blessing, "Celebrate the upcoming festival with joy ... with regards, awaiting Heavenly mercy ..."
