Manuscript - Three Megillot with Targum and Rash"i and an Unknown Commentary - Color Decorations. Yemen, Early 19th Century
Complete manuscript - the three meggilahs read on the festivals: Shir HaShirim, Ruth and Kohelet. With Targum, Rash"i, Siftei Chachamim, and differences in mesorah, as well as a commentary by an unknown writer. Typical Yemenite script, beautiful and orderly. The body of the meggilahs is written with vowelization and cantillation. Yemen, early 19th century.
The writer's preface appears on p. 2a, where he explains at length the custom of reading the meggilah on the holidays. He copied Rash"i's introduction to Shir HaShirim onto page 2b.
Colorful illustrated title page (without text) at the beginning of the sefer, with illustrations of birds and floral patterns. The opening word of the meggilah is written in a large, colorful floral frame. The title at the top of every page and other words are accompanied by red ink, which gives the manuscript an impressive look.
A short commentary appears at the sides of the pages, with gematrias and acrostics, recalling Rabbi Chaim Vital's Sha'arei Kedushah. "Rabbi Pinchas Eraki, " rabbi and av beit din of Sana'a in the 18th century, is mentioned on the last page of Shir HaShirim. The writer notes on page 28a, "I saw a manuscript by my grandfather Mahara"tz, who explained the word thought [מחשבה] in a way he said is consistent with the explanation of the Aruch. The commentary's author is unidentified. To the best of our knowledge, this commentary has never been printed.
Refer to the Ohel Chaim (Lehman) catalog, Part II, manuscript B-154, manuscript of Shir HaShirim with commentary - apparently similar to the one here. (The commentary appears in the manuscript there only on Shir HaShirim and not on the other megillot.)
[1] 47 leaf. 26.5 cm. Thick paper.
Moderate condition. The title page and several leaves are partially detached. Many worming perforations (primarily in the inner margins). Stains. Wear and usage marks. Old binding, blemished.
