Lachmei Todah, by Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch, Son of the Hafla'ah. First Edition. Pedigree Copy. Gloss
Sefer Lachmei Todah - halachic novellae and aggadahs, including a eulogy for his father, the Ba'al Hafla'ah, by the gaon Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Horowitz, rabbi of Frankfurt and son of the Ba'al Hafla'ah. Offenbach, 1816. First edition in the author's lifetime.
On the title page: Lachmei Todah - which is the second part of Machaneh Levi. The author actually printed the book Machaneh Levi 15 years previously, together with his father's Hafla'ah. Along the book's leaves there is an echo of the pitiful spiritual state in Frankfurt, the influence of the haskalah movement and the emancipation of the spiritual level in the city. He protests the city residents' exchanging Shabbat for Sunday, abandonment of the synagogue to the extent that it was difficult to find a minyan for prayer, the attempt to cancel various mitzvahs such as sukkah - and he also fought against the tendency to not marry.
On the leaf before the title page, there is an interesting owner's signature from the author's disciple, the gaon Rabbi Pilta Epstein. The signature, reading: "I was privileged to receive this, the youth Pilta Epstein Segal" attests to its coming from an estate, possibly that of his teacher, the author. Handwritten gloss on page 102a.
Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for brief biographies of the author, the gaon Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch HaLevi Horowitz and the book's owner, the gaon Rabbi Tzvi Pilta b"r Moshe Segal Epstein.
