Letter from Rabbi Zvi Hirsh Kalisher to the Tzaddik of Grodzisk
Important letter written and signed by Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Kalischer [apparently] to Rabbi Eliyahu Guttmacher, the "Tzaddik of Grodzisk."
[1] leaf. 14x22 cm.
Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Kalischer [1795-1874] was a disciple of Rabbi Yaakov Lorberbaum of Lissa, author of Chavat Da'at and Netivot HaMishpat, and then studied by Rabbi Akiva Eiger. He served as rabbi of Toruń for decades without receiving a salary.
Rabbi Zvi Hirsch encouraged immigration to and settling in Eretz Yisrael, and even viewed bringing sacrifices in a positive light. He published his opinions in his noted work Drishat Zion. At the same time, he actively helped the settlements in Eretz Yisrael, including an appeal to Moses Montefiore and the publication of many articles in anthologies and journals. This letter discusses the publication of an article in the HaMaggid journal and mentions Moses Montefiore. The letter was sent to: My dear friend Rabbi Eliyahu Guttmacher, the "Tzaddik from Grodzisk." Both of these rabbanim studied under Rabbi Akiva Eiger.
Rabbi Eliyahu Guttmacher was a genius and kabbalist. He was a close disciple of Rabbi Akiva Eiger and served as Rabbi of Grodzisk. In his later years he became known as a miracle worker and was treated like a Chassidic Admor. He passed away in 1875.
