Letter from Rabbi Yosef Babad, av”d Vienna, 1938
Postcard from Rabbi Yosef Babad, written on the eve of the Holocaust, when he was Rabbi in Vienna, addressed to the Chief Rabbinate of Jaffa-Tel Aviv.
Rabbi Yosef b”r Yaakov Babad (1875-1943) was raised by his grandfather, Rabbi Alexander Shmuel Halperin, av”d Lemberg and by the Mahr”i Schmelkes. In 1910, he began to serve as Rabbi of Kalush and filled this role for about twenty years. He then served as rabbi in Vienna. In 1939, he fled to Amsterdam and left on the very last boat to England in 1940. He settled in Manchester, but his heart was weakened by his flight and travails, and the terrible news from occupied Europe hastened his death on the 2nd of Adar aleph, 1943 (Meir Wunder,
