Birkenau, Paris, edited by David Szmulewski, 1984, formatted by Noé Gruss
David Szmulewski (born July 26, 1912 in Koło, Poland and died January 15, 1990 in Paris) was a Polish Jewish communist activist, former member of the International Brigades in Spain, deported to Auschwitz and active member of the resistance in this camp. David Szmulewski was born on July 26, 1912 in Koło, Poland in a very poor Jewish family. He received a traditional Jewish education. Initially a Zionist activist, he spent several years in Mandatory Palestine, then settled in France where he joined the Communist Party. After General Franco's putsch, he joined the International Brigades with the Spanish Republicans. He fought in the Naftali Botwin company, a company made up exclusively of Polish Jews under the command of Emmanuel Mink. He was wounded in combat. He took refuge in France in 1939 where he was interned in various camps. Released by the authorities, he joined the resistance before being arrested and interned in Drancy. It was there that he met Alter Fajnzylberg. He was transferred to the Royallieu camp and from there, he was deported by convoy No. 1 on March 27, 1942 to Auschwitz. There, he was tattooed with the number 27849. He was part of the roofers' Kommando, which allowed him to travel to the three camps of the Auschwitz complex.
The resistance at Auschwitz
David Szmulewski took part in the resistance in the Auschwitz camp like many former members of the Botwin company, such as Emanuel Mink. The latter, deported from France, also formed the first nucleus of the international resistance organization of Auschwitz6. One of the organization's goals was to save as many lives as possible by giving advice to arrivals so that they could escape selection for the gas chambers. Another activity consisted of standing guard to allow practicing deportees to pray and organize religious ceremonies. As he could move around the entire camp, David Szmulewski transported food, clothing and medicines, gave information to the resistance on the situation in the camps, the objects piled up in the Kanada. He helped prepare the escape of many deportees. During the summer of 1944, he was tasked by the resistance command with organizing the taking of photographs of the Birkenau killing facilities in order to prove to the whole world the extermination operation at work4. It was he who transported the camera, certainly found in Canada, with Alter Fajnzylberg to introduce it near Krematorium V. He acted as a liaison between the members of the Sonderkommando and the resistance organization to prepare the general revolt of the camp during the summer of 1944, but this project was aborted
After the war
After the war, David Szmulewski returned to Poland, where he held a senior civil service position. But the violent anti-Semitic campaign orchestrated by the Polish government from 1968 onwards forced him to leave Poland. He found refuge in France in 1970. He published his testimony in Yiddish in 1984: Zikhroynès fun vidershtand in Oyshwitz Birkenau, Memories of the resistance at Auschwitz Birkenau. In 1987, he was interviewed by the historian Jean-Claude Pressac on the circumstances of the taking of the photos of the Sonderkommandos at Auschwitz. He died in 1990
