Janot S. Roskin
born on April 17, 1884 in Rjesitza near Vitebsk/Wizebsk, Russia/today: Belarus, died 1946 in Indianapolis (IN), USA, music publisher, composer, arranger, folk song collector, conductor, singer.
Janot Roskin worked as a choir member and prayer leader in his youth and collected folk songs while traveling through his home region. In 1903 he went to Berlin. In 1911 he founded a conservatory in Berlin-Halensee, which was under his direction until 1918. In 1916 he founded the publishing house for national folk art in Berlin-Wilmersdorf, which he renamed the Hatikwah music publishing house in 1921. With this company he campaigned for the dissemination of Jewish music. In the publishing house for national folk art he published, among other things: “Jewish National Dances” (1919) and “Collected Jewish Songs” (1916, 1921), with Hatikwah the double volume “50 Jewish Folk Songs” op. 11 and op. 12 with his own arrangements for voice and piano. The collection contained Hasidic songs, lullabies, children's songs, love songs and family songs, among others, including the hymn “Hatikwah”. He also published “20 Jewish Songs” for a voice or violin and piano with compositions by Siegfried Friedländer, Josef Neger, Boris Grossmann, Janot Roskin, James Rothstein and others.
In addition to his publishing activities, Janot Roskin directed the choir of the Jewish Reform Congregation of the synagogue in Levetzowstrasse, Berlin-Moabit, and was active as a composer. He wrote compositions for piano, songs and arrangements of Jewish folk melodies. From 1933 onwards he performed variously as part of the Jewish Cultural Association. In 1933 he directed the performance of Louis Lewandowski's "Three Psalms" and in 1934 of Haydn's "The Creation". His own compositions were also performed at events organised by the Jewish Cultural Association. Some of his songs appeared on records by the companies Artiphon and Semer.
In 1935 Janot Roskin was expelled from the Reich Music Chamber. In 1936 Janot Roskin had a "music publishing report" printed for Hatikvah. It was probably during this time that he went into exile in the USA. Since his catalogue only contained so-called Jewish music, the rights to his works were not taken away from him through "Aryanisation" and so he was able to continue running his publishing company in the USA. He founded the music publishing company Hatikvah Music Publishing Company in Boston in 1941 at the latest. He subsequently moved the company several times. Addresses of the publisher are known in Boston, Roxbury, Dorchester (Massachusetts) and Indianapolis (Indiana). The publishing house's production consisted of a good 170 publishing numbers. These included new editions of the German publishing house's production, above all the "Jewish Folk Songs" mentioned above, and original compositions by Leo Low, Isadore Freed and by Janot Roskin himself ("Friday Evening Service" op. 16). A large part of the publishing house's production consisted of Janot Roskin's arrangements of works by other composers, such as Georg Friedrich Händel, Fromental Halévy, Hermann Jadlowker, Albert Kellermann, Louis Lewandowski, David Nowakowski, A. M. Rabinowitsch, F. Rehfeld, Weintraub and W. W. Wuerfel. The New York company Bloch Publishing Co. took over the distribution of his publishing works. As a member of the Jewish Music Forum, Janot Roskin was in contact with the Jewish music scene in the USA. After his death in 1946, his wife, the composer Evelyn Borofsky Roskin (born in 1903), took over the publishing house. She probably continued to run the company until her death in 1967. Later, some of Hatikvah's works were republished by Transcontinental Music Publishers, New York.
