Konstantin Dmitrievich Kavelin (1818 — 1885) was a Russian historian, jurist, sociologist, and publicist. He covered General issues of history through the prism of legal relations and gave the presentation a journalistic form. Along with B. N. Chicherin, he became the founder of the state school in Russian historiography. He developed the idea of the decisive role of the state in the life of the people. The state, according to Kavelin, was the highest form of social existence in the history of Russia, and the government — the initiator and guarantor of progress. In the early 1840s, he joined the Westerners and became close to T. N. Granovsky.
