שמואל דוד לוּצאטוֹ היה פרשן מקרא, בלשן עברי, משורר, פילוסוף, חוקר ספרות ומתרגם.
עיקר עיסוקו היה בפירוש המקרא בדרך הפשט, (1880-1865)
הספר שנכתב על ידי שמואל דוד לוצאטו בפאדוא נעתק לעברית על ידי חיים צבי לערנער,
חיים צבי לֶרְנֶר (בכתיב יידיש, שנהג בזמנו: לערנער; בראשי תיבות: חצ"ל; ברוסית (כתיב שלפני הרפורמה): Х. Г. Лернеръ; י"ד בניסן תקע"ה, 24 באפריל 1815 – ה' בסיוון תרמ"ט, 4 ביוני 1889) היה מדקדק יהודי ומורה לעברית שפעל באזור אוקראינה בימי האימפריה הרוסית, מהשמרנים שבמשכילי רוסיה. חיבר את "מורה הלשון" – ספר לימוד חדש ושימושי לדקדוק השפה העברית, שנפוץ מאוד בתקופתו ומאוחר יותר.
