The famed printer Rabbi Yisrael Bak (1797-1875): a disciple of the leading rabbis of the Chassidic Movement - the Admorim Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev and Rabbi Yisrael of Ruzhin. He was born in Berditchev and since his youth, worked as a printer. In 1815, he established a (second) printing house in Berditchev, where he printed approx. 26 books before immigrating to Eretz Yisrael. It is told that he was the one who designed the types of Slavita. After his immigration to Eretz Yisrael in ca. 1831, he settled in Safed, where he established a printing house that operated for a short while, until the city was destroyed in the earthquake of 1837. In 1841, Rabbi Yisrael Bak re-established his printing house in Jerusalem, being the first printing house in Jerusalem that printed Hebrew books and the only one in the town until the mid-1860s.
