Seder Tefillot. Amsterdam [1772]

Rare Siddur with a Spanish translation.

Seder Tefillot Midei Chodesh Bechodsho, Sephardim custom, with a Spanish translation on facing pages.

At the beginning of the Siddur, there are two title pages: the first is a fine title page with a copper-engraved illustration of the Binding of Yitzchak. The printed signature of the artist, A. Santcroos, appears on the margin of the title page.

Includes prayers for the days of the week, Sabbath, Rosh Chodesh, Hanukkah and Purim and Selichot for the moth of Elul.

At the beginning of the book, a Spanish dedication by the publisher, Yitzchak Suissa Burrito to Moshe ben Aharon de Pinto and a Spanish list of subscribers - this list is a historical record of the members of the Sephardic community of Amsterdam and does not usually appear in contemporary books.

The siddur was edited by Rabbi Yitzchak Hacohen Belinfanti, with an approbation by the Rav of the Sephardic community of Amsterdam, Rabbi Shlomo Shalem, who explains the reason for printing a Siddur with a Spanish translation: “many among us do not know or understand what they are saying and how shall they worship G-d without knowing the meaning of their words?”
