Sansan Le'Yair – With Additional Prayers and the Holy Name in the Author's Handwriting, the Chida. Livorno, 1794. Second Edition, Printed During the Author's Lifetime. Rare.

Sansan Le'Yair, 'The order of prayer that was performed in one of the cities to stir mercy, by the command of righteous men, the exalted officers of the mighty and uplifted angels, including 'Things Beneficial for Every Trouble That Should Not Come.' Authored by the Chida (Rabbi Chaim Yosef David Azulai).

In the copy before us, printed during the Chida's lifetime, there is an addition in his handwritten script on pages 6/2 and 7/1. In these pages, the Chida adds short handwritten prayers for times of distress, and he even writes a Holy Name that one should have in his mind to be saved from any danger. It is likely that the Chida composed these prayers during a time of personal distress from which he sought refuge.

The prayers added by the Chida in his own handwriting are as follows:

On the right side: 'And save us from persecution, captivity, disgrace, and war, whether in the city or outside the city, whether at sea or on land, from all kinds of siege and distress, may You hide us under the shadow of Your wings.'

On the left side: 'Let terror and dread fall upon them; (while directing your thoughts to the Holy Name noted in the initials of this verse) with Your great arm, may they be silent like a stone' (Book of Exodus 16/16).

In parentheses, the Chida writes to direct one's focus to the Holy Name that emerges from the initials of the words 'Let terror and dread fall upon them.'

On the inner front cover, there is a verse handwritten (likely not that of the Chida), resembling a short poem composed of verses.

Rabbi Chaim Yosef David Azulai (Chida) (5484-5566): A Halachic authority, rabbinical shaliach, and Kabbalist. He authored dozens of books covering various Torah topics, as well as a bibliography and an autobiography.
