Silver Havdalah Bowl. Afghanistan, early 20th century.
A traditional Afghan bowl (jam-tas), shallow in depth, made of silver and decorated with the Star of David, plant ornaments, and a Hebrew engraving of the blessing over wine in the Havdalah ceremony: "I will raise a cup of salvation and in the name of the Lord I will declare, I will say, Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the world, Creator of the fruit of the vine."

Drinking bowls of this kind, like other household utensils, were sometimes given as a wedding gift, and the groom's name and date of birth were engraved on them, or they were used by the members of the household for other events.

For reference: Zohar Hangabi and Baraka Yaniv, Afghanistan, the synagogue and the Jewish home. The Center for Jewish Art and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, 1991. pp. 10, items 72-74.
