Modern Art: An Innovative and Graceful Yahrzeit Candle Holder made by the Renowned Jerusalemite Silversmith, Zelig Segal. Signed.
Zelig Segal's undulating shapes and a smooth surface create an emotive context for the illuminated yahrzeit candle, whose flame is to be reflected numerous times in the highly-polished silver background. The holder is crafted from a silver sheet that is "torn" its center – an allusion to the ripping of one's garments upon hearing of a family member's death.

As is typical of Segal's innovative modern works, the piece has a beautiful sculptural presence that enables it to function as a decorative piece even when not in use.

The yahrzeit candleholder was created by Segal for Judaica Heirlooms, a gallery in Jerusalem committed to displaying and promoting the works of talented Judaica artists from around the world.

Zelig Segal was a renowned Israeli designer, painter, sculptor, and Judaica artist, educated at the Bezalel Academy of Design. From 1949-1954 he studied in the Department of Metals, specializing in metal sculpture and design. An exceptionally innovative artist, his ingenuity knew no bounds, and his works consistently surprised and impressed with their formal and functional inventiveness.

Segal was born in Jerusalem in 1933 and passed away in 2015 at the age of 82.

14 x 13 cm. Signed and Stamped.
