Magnificent and complete copy of a Halachic Sefer Yesod !

The book, Minchat Cohen is authored by Rabbi Avraham Pimentel, one of Amsterdam and Hamburg’s leading Rabbis.

The Sefer Belonged to Rabbi David Piazza, a Firenze Sage, and has numerous glosses in his handwriting, and to Rabbi David Stern.

Handwritten ownership listings in the page following the title page: “David son of LA”A Shmuel Piazza”. He signed an acronym of his and his father’s name on the title page: “DS”P”: Numerous, lengthy glosses, handwritten by Rabbi David Piazza appear throughout the book.

A note penned in English appears on the endpaper, along with the signature of Reform Rabbi Dr David Stern.

Dr David Stern (1854-1885) was known to have committed suicide. He was born in Manchester. The earlier part of his years were spent in England, after which he immigrated to America. There he moved from town to town, serving as a Progressive Rabbi. His opinions were considered radical, even among the Liberal and Reform communities. This resulted in clashes and disagreements, that forced Dr Stern, who gained a reputation for impulsivity, to repeatedly relocate. He ultimately took his own life on 18 April 1885. In his suicide letter he explained this tragic action to be a result of the lack of justice ruling the world, and against which he no longer had the strength or ability to fight.

Rabbi David Piazza was a Rabbi in Firenze in the 17th Century. His responsa appear in Shu”t Afar Yaakov.

The book includes three parts.

1. Mevo HaShemesh – This booklet comprises the most fundamental approach in ascertaining the Halachic times of Bein HaShemashot, twilight.

2. Sefer HaTa’aruvot – The laws of Bittul Issurin.

3. Mishmeret HaShabbat – The laws of asking a non-Jew to perform actions forbidden on Shabbat and Holidays, on a Jew’s behalf, and cooking on Shabbat.
