The Famed Venetian Haggadah. With a Numerous Impressive Woodcuts and the Commentary of “Tzli Esh”. Hebrew and Yiddish. Venice 1663.

The Passover Haggadah from Venice 1663, printed in Biblical Hebrew and in Yiddish, with images about all the miracles and wonders that occurred to our ancestors in Egypt at the sea and in the desert.

Inside the Haggadah appears the commentary “Tzli Esh' from the renowned Venetian rabbi: Rabbi Yehuda Aryeh of Modena (Leon Modena, 1571-1648), who was a rabbi, cantor, teacher, writer and polemicist.

The Haggadah was created according to the Venice 1629 edition [with minor changes] and was published in three editions: in Italian [in Hebrew letters], in Yiddish and in Ladino.

The pages have a decorative crown-like frame that spreads over two pages and an illustration depicting the text at the bottom of the page.

The Haggadah was considered groundbreaking and since its publication these two elements have become common in illustrated Haggadahs. A large number of impressive woodcuts adorn the Venice Haggadah. The Haggadah is decorated with many well-known scenes from the Bible, as well as pictures that illustrate preparations for the holiday.
