Rare Silver Hanukkah Lamp in the Bauhaus Style. Highly-Quality Hand-made craftsmanship. Germany, ca. 1920. Marked.

A highly important and very unusual Hanukkah lamp, made mostly of silver, handmade by a talented German silversmith in the early 20th century. The base of this lamp is stamped with several German hallmarks. In addition to the crown and moon, is one that designates the item as handmade, and another - HERWEG –that is known from a small selection of works, all designed in the 'Bauhaus' style, and all notable for their delicate hammer work.

The base of the lamp is designed in a wide elliptical shape, and is embellished with clean and classic hammer work. A single piece of material, carved in a complementary ovular shape, forms the lamp's middle section, and is topped by a wavy bar supporting a row of candleholders. This horizontal element balances the elongated base and is similarly adorned with lovely and delicate hammer work. Rising up from the center of the bar, behind the shamash, is a thin pole topped by a classic, silver Star of David.

Although the Bauhaus is mainly known as an architectural style, characterized by its functional and minimalist design, the movement also affected the fields of interior design, furniture design and decorative objects. Established in Germany in the first half of the 20th century, the Bauhaus movement eventually led to the development of the so-called 'international' style.
