A most precious find! The signature of the greatest of the Achronim, Rabbi Shaul of Amsterdam, on the responsa Shev Yaakov, Frankfurt, 1742.
The Gaon Rabbi Shaul Lowenstam, the Av Beit Din of Amsterdam (1717-1790) was among the outstanding rabbis of his generation.
Chida barely mentions the rabbis of his generation in his book "Shem HaGedolim, " but Rabbi Shaul is mentioned with enthusiasm: "And I, the unworthy one merited to see the face of the Shechina in 1778 when I went as an emissary and I merited to learn insights from his Torah knowledge, his humility and his perfection."
