Rabbi Prof Jacob Lauterbach original German handwritten letter & signature, 1929
Rabbi Prof. Jacob Lauterbach: original manuscript letter in German, written by Lauterbach & signed by him, dated November 25, 1929, on stationary of the Hebrew Union College, folded horizontally 3 times. On the blank back are some handwritten notes in Hebrew "for the students" - unclear by whom it was written. Lauterbach (1873–1942) was born in Galizia and educated in Germany; he was a Talmudist, who served on the faculty of the HUC, and is best known for his scholarly edition (and translation into English) of the Midrashic 'Mekhlita of Rabbi Ishmael'; he also gave halachic guidance to the Reform community through a series of Responsa written for it. He contributed many articles to the Jewish Encyclopedia and to the Hebrew 'Otzar Yisrael' encyclopedia.
