The elderly woman depicted with an elaborate headdress with pendants. A civil official rank badge is worn on a traditional red robe. She is sitting in a silk-draped armchair. Ink and color on paper. Provenance: Collection of Edward Hyers Clayton (1886-1946). American writer and missioner. E.H. Clayton and his wife were missionaries of the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society in charge of Wayland Academy, a missionary school in Hangzhou, China from 1912 to 1942. E.H. Clayton wrote a book Heaven Below based on his living experience in China.
