A CHINESE ANCESTOR PORTRAIT OF A CIVIL OFFICIAL. 19TH C.
The portrait shows an elderly official wearing the traditional blue robe with the crane badge and a hat with fur trim. He is seated on a silk-draped armchair. His posture is static, and his face is full of dignity. Ink and color on paper, late Qing dynasty. Provenance: Collection of Edward Hyers Clayton (1886-1946). American writer and missioner. E.H. Clayton and his wife were missionaries of the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society in charge of Wayland Academy, a missionary school in Hangzhou, China from 1912 to 1942. E.H. Clayton wrote a book Heaven Below based on his living experience in China.
