Early Autograph from the Mahara"m Schick - Complete Booklet in his Hand. Holitsch, 1832

Booklet of early Torah novellae handwritten by the gaon Rabbi Moshe Schick - Mahara"m Schick. He wrote them as a young avreich just after his wedding, while still being supported by his father-in-law, before taking on any rabbinate. Holitch, 1832.

Before us is a complete compilation on the topic of "mashkanta" (Bava Metzia, fifth chapter, leaf 66 onward). The compilation before us contains some of the Mahara"m Schick's earliest Torah novellae. It was written after his wedding, while still being supported by his father-in-law ("eating kest"). These were the days the Mahara"m Schick was built up, as brought in his biography: Rebbetzin Gittel was a cousin of the exalted leader Rabbi Peretz Frankel from the town of Holitch. After his marriage, Mahara"m Schick settled Holitch near his father-in-law, who promised a generous dowry so that he would be able to sit in the tent of Torah to contemplate fine words as was his pure heart's desire. And as his rabbi, the Chata"m Sofer wrote to him while he was living in Holtisch: "Raise up your horns and your springs will burst forth." And there, in Holtisch, the Mahara"m Schick wrote the compilation before us. While still sitting with his Torah and his Divine service, without the burden of a community or of the yeshivah (which numbered almost 1000 students) and without the great burden of producing the multipronged responsa which characterized him just a few years later. It is fascinating to compare his Torah novellae at the age of 25 to those from after years of maturity. Incidentally, this kuntress is the source of the urban legend that the Mahara"m Schick was lacking in talent as a youth (Heav-n forbid), and that it was only in the merit of his diligence that he achieved greatness. Here, in this compilation before us, composed, as stated, in his youth, dealing with one of the most complex Talmudic topics, we can see his his extraordinary genius, and his astonishing mastery in all facets of Torah, taking two mountains and using logic to grind them down against each other.

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of the Mahara"m Schick.
