Toldot Aharon, an index to Chazal sayings in the Talmud, with supplementary Toldot Yaakov index to Chazal sayings in the Jerusalem Talmud, Amsterdam, 1652
Toldot Aharon, by Rabbi Aharon of Pesaro, first printed in Freiburg in 1583. In 1652 this book was republished in Amsterdam, with the addition (with a separate title page) of Toldot Yaakov, by Rabbi Yaakov Sasportas, with citations from the Jerusalem Talmud. Rabbi Sasportas was renowned for his outspoken and determined opposition to the Shabbetaian movement. The title page of Toldot Yaakov praises Rabbi Menashe ben Yisrael for promoting the publication of the book. In his preface, Rabbi Sasportas details the events that led to the publication of the book and the role played by “the Torah sage and sublime philosopher, the great and revered leader of Israel, our teacher and rabbi, Menashe ben Yisrael,” whose idea it was to publish the book, and who even provided some of the financing for its publication.
