Wedding Certificate Signed by Rabbi Moshe Mordechai Epstein, Rosh Yeshivah of Knesset Yisrael

Edah Chareidit marriage certificate signed by Rabbi Moshe Mordechai Epstein, Jerusalem, 1939.

The bridegroom was one of the first students at the Knesset Yisrael yeshivah in Chevron, later becoming the gaon Rabbi Simchah Zissel Shapira, signed by Rabbi Moshe Mordechai Epstein, just a few months after the 1929 pogroms.

Rabbi Moshe Mordechai Epstein was born in 1866, studied at the Volozhin yeshivah and was considered a prodigy there. After the passing of renowned philanthropist Rabbi Shraga Feivel Frank, his widow wished to fulfill his will to marry his daughters off to Talmud scholars of stature, and with the Netzi"v's recommendation, she selected Rabbi Moshe Mordechai Epstein. The "Alter of Slabodka" requested that he serve as the rosh yeshivah of Knesset Yisrael. He was also active in the Council of Torah Sages. Due to the draft decree on the yeshivah students in 1924, the yeshivah in Slabodka moved to Chevron in the Land of Israel. Rabbi Moshe Mordechai Epstein was greatly weakened by the pogroms of 1929, and passed away in 1934. He authored the book series Levush Mordechai.

He signed this document 'עפשטיין' but shortly thereafter changed the spelling to 'אפשטיין.'

[1] leaf paper. 22x23 cm. Slight tears and filing perforations. Moderate-fine condition.
