Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, 地藏 ["Earth Womb"] a folk painting, late 17th / early 18th century.
Painting of the Bodhisattva Kṣitigarbha, sitting with a halo around his head. Ksitigarbha is the Bodhisattva of the inhabitants of hell. With the staff in his hand he forces open the gates of hell and with the wish-fulfilling stone he lights up the darkness. Gods of hell, guards and inhabitants of hell are seen below Bodhisattva.
Paintings such as this one were hung in Daoist temples during funerals and wakes with offerings to the gods of the underworld.
Framed, inner size 73.5X181.5 cm. Fair condition. Unexamined out of frame.
