Photo-album, portraying the Yiddish Theater in Iași , Romania, late 1940s and 1950s.
The Yiddish Theater in Iași , active during the years 1949-1963, concurrently with the Teatru Evreiesc Baraşeum that performed in Bucarest. The artistic managers of the theater were the director Iso Schapira, (1903-1981) and the dramaturge Iţic Şvarţ-Kara (1906-2001). Amongst the actors were Solomon Friedman, Abram Naimark, Ruhele Heller-Schapira and others. Plays performed were by Jewish writers such as Abraham Goldfaden, Sholem Aleichem and Mendele Moicher Seforim side by side with translation of plays by Mark Twain, Howard Fast, Boris Gorbatov, Carlo Goldoni and others. The artistic activity of the above mentioned directors and actors, whether on stage or at other events (some social events out of the theater) is well documented in this album.
About 165 photographs, including 135 photographs of various sizes, 5.5X8.5 cm to 17.5X11.5 cm + 30 photographs 3.5X2.5 cm or the size of a passport photo. Album: 22X30.5 cm. Generally in good condition. Glue-marks and stains. Some photographs are detached.
