Order of tractates in this volume differ slightly from listing in Bibliography Institute CD [Shabbat, Eruvin, Pesachim, Yoma, Shekalim, Sukkah, Rosh HaShanah, Beitzah, Ta’anit, Megillah, Chagigah and Mo’ed-Katan].
All tractates contain dozens of lengthy erudite glosses in handwriting typical of Rabbi Eliezer Simcha Rabinowitz. In some he deeply delves into a longwinded debate with the Sheyarei Korban. Ownership notations stating that book belongs to him.
The Ga’on Rabbi Eliezer Simcha Rabinowitz (1832-1911), son of Rabbi Menachem Mendel (Mendli) Av Beit Din of Kovno. Among well-known rabbis of Lithuania, and leaders of Russian Jewry; right-hand of Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor in dealing with pertinent matters. Av Beit Din in Suwałki and later on in Łomża [succeeding the Maharil Diskin]. Exalted genius proficient in Torah; the Ga’on Rabbi Yosef Razin – the Rogatchover referred to him as: “Indeed, he is the Shas itself”. Wrote Chidushim in all facets of the Torah and the books in his library were filled with his glosses. His Chidushim and comments were printed in two volumes of “Chidushei Rabbi Eliezer Simcha” (Machon Yerushalayim, 1993-1998), and his glosses on Ein Yitzchak Responsa [by Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor] were printed in the Machon Yerushalayim edition of this responsa. These glosses, as well, demonstrate the enormous extent of Rabbi Eliezer Simcha’s genius, and they practically constitute an entire composition on Seder Mo’ed of the Jerusalemite Talmud. To the best of our knowledge, the glosses were not printed.
