Manuscript, Sefer HaKavanot. [Damascus?/Safed?, turn of the 17th century].
Mahadura Kama (first edition) known as "Sefer HaKavanot Yashan" - from the first editing by R. Chaim Vital. With two new passages which do not appear in the known manuscripts of the Mahadura Kama.
This manuscript is incomplete, lacking leaves at the beginning and at the end (begins at leaf 12 and ends at leaf 78). Scribal writing, charming semi-cursive Oriental script, with titles in square calligraphic lettering - in the characteristic style of R. Chaim Vital and his scribes in Damascus. Two passages in this manuscript do not appear in the printed version of Sefer HaKavanot and do not exist in any of the known manuscripts. On leaf 17r is a complete passage about the "secret" of making tzitzit, which does not appear in any other source (and apparently was not edited by the Maharchu, but was written by the "Chaverim" and by R. Moshe Yonah). On leaf 24v is a section about entering the Beit HaKnesset and encircling the teva (stand of the shatz), with teachings of the Maharchu in the name of his teacher the Ari and in the name of his companion R. Elya Palkon, including a passage which does not appear in the printed version of Sefer HaKavanot.
This is an important manuscript, apparently written during the lifetime of the author, R. Chaim Vital, c. 1590-1620, and possibly copied by one of his disciples.
12-78 leaves. 20.5 cm. Approximately 38 written lines per page. High-quality paper. Fair condition, wear and worming. Detached leaves and stains. Folk-crafted worn and detached leather binding with remnants of loops for fastening.
This description was based on the enclosed report of a kabbalist Rabbi who studied the content of the manuscript.
