An album with 31 photographs documenting life at the Meir Shfeya youth village. Meir Shfeya [ca. late 1920s to mid-1930s].
The photographs depict the boys and girls of Meir Shfeya while working in the garden and during a Purim celebration; the mandolin orchestra of the village, and more. On verso of some of the photographs there are handwritten dedications, to a guide named Doris, dated 1929-1935. Several photographs are stamped with the photographers' stamps: "Photo Crystal, Zichron Ya'akov", "Photo Crystal, Hadera", "Photo Brener, Haifa", "Photo Shleiser, Rechovot" (Hebrew).
Meir Shfeya was founded in 1891 as as a moshava adjacent to Zichron Ya'akov. In 1904, Yisrael Belkind, one of the founders of Bilu, established there an educational institution for children who became orphaned during the Kishinev Pogrom. In 1917, subsequent to the expulsion of the Jews of Tel-Aviv-Jaffa by the Turks, the Herzliya Hebrew Gymnasium was moved to Meir Shfeya. In 1923, an orphanage for girls who became orphaned during World War I was established in the Meir Shfeya and in 1925, it was turned into an orphanage of the "Hadassah" organization. In addition to being a warm home and educational institution, the children of Meir Shfeya also acquired work experience, mainly in agricultural work.
A total of 31 photographs, arranged in the album using mounting corners (new). Size of photographs varies. Size of album: 15x21 cm. Good overall condition. Creases and minor stains and blemishes to some of the photographs.
