Long Letter from Rabbi David Friedman of Karlin to Rabbi Shmuel Salant

A letter from Rabbi David Friedman of Karlin addressed to Rabbi Shmuel Salant. The letter regards Rabbi Meir Soloveitchik who had fallen ill and was instructed to seek warmer climates such as Italy.
In this letter dated the 3rd of Elul, 1895, Rabbi David writes: " Since his soul pines for Torah, we found it correct to send him to the Holy Land in order to find a cure for his illness in the fresh air. He should bathe in the sea of Yafo and eat the grapes of Yafo and shall find cure ...."
Rabbi David Friedman (1828 - 1915) of Karlin, also known as Rabbi David Karliner, was a brilliant and holy scholar. The leaders of his generation titled him "gadol hador" and testified that he was a foremost Halachic authority. He served as rabbi of Karlin where Jews would flock to him with halachic questions and dilemmas. He authored Piskei Halachos Yad David – three parts, and Responsa She'eilas David.
