A touching, historical letter handwritten by Rabbi reines, the founder of 'ha'Mizrachi', to the settlers of the Moshava Ekron, who had joined the 'Ha'Mizrachi'.
An item that belongs in a museum, extraordinarily important and touching!
A touching letter by the fonder of 'ha'Mizrach' Movement, Rabbi Yitzchak Ya'akov Reines, to the settlers of Ekron, who had joined the movement a short while after its establishment. The letter opens a unique window to Rabbi Reines' spiritual world and his Zionist doctrine.
The letter is from the 12th of Sivan, 1903 and it was sent by Rabbi Reines to the settlers of the Moshava Ekron. In it, Rabbi Reines expresses his joy over the organization of the members of the Moshava to work "the work of Zionism based in holiness and the spirit of the Mizrachi". The letter was written a short while after the establishment of 'Ha'Mizrach; Movement (Adar A 1902) and two months after its first congress (Adar 1903).
Rabbi Reines begins his letter with words of praise to the "mighty courageous men" of Ekron whose "Love of Zion has motivated them to come to the land of our forefather and hold onto it".
Then, Rabbi Reines praises working the land and the settlement of the country "by the sweat and blood" of the settlers and that they are "armed to go before their brothers in the Diaspora and pave the road leading to Zion". He blesses them from the bottom of heart and expresses his joy for their joining "our army to work with us the work of the nation and the land". This historical document provides an authentic peek to Rabbi Reines' Zionist world.
Rabbi Reines ends his letter with an excited call:
"Come brothers and fulfill this hope of mine … these are days of action. It is time to work … and every man of Israel must direct his actions and strength in favor of our sublime idea. May our brothers the peasants, who were the first pioneers, set an example to their brothers in the Diaspora …"
The Moshava Ekron was established in 1883 by the Baron Rothschild and at the initiative of Rabbi Shmuel Mohilever. Several years later, its name was changed to "Mazkeret Batya". In 1952 it was declared a local council.
Rabbi Yitzchak Ya'akov Reines (1839-1915) Av Beit Din Lida was one of the leading rabbis of Lithuania and the founder of the 'Ha'Mizrachi' Movement. He was known as a Torah prodigy. Authored the 'Edut Be'Ya'akov' Responsa and eight books of Derashot and Jewish thought. Established the yeshiva that integrated religious and general studies.
The letter is in an impressive frame.
