A Rare Letter by Dozens of the Rabbis of Jerusalem including Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv and Rabbi Amram Blau against the Municipal Education Tax of the Government
A letter by dozens of the rabbis of Jerusalem against the education tax of the government of the British Mandate. Jerusalem, 1945. Rabbis of Ha'Edah Ha'Charedit as well as more "moderate" rabbis signed the letter.
"Since the income from this tax will go to the support of anti-religious educational institutions … our Talmud Torah institutions are forbidden to enjoy this tax as our rabbis have ruled …. We demand that the government cancel the imposition of the tax from the Jerusalem district…"
At the end of the letter, the rabbis write: "If the tax is confirmed and realized we shall remain loyal to our religion and Torah and we shall not willingly pay it. The Jerusalem Municipality will be able to collect the tax only by means of auctioning our possessions by the execution office…"
Signed by dozens of the rabbis of Jerusalem, including: Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, Rabbi Amram Blau, Rabbi Yeshaya Steinberger, Rabbi Yechiel Yehuda Schlezinger, Rabbi Shraga Frank, Rabbi Yitzchak Zilberman, Rabbi Zvi Segal of Safed, Rabbi Avraham Ya'akov Goldreich (Breslov), Rabbi Yehoshua Heshil Haltovsky (Karlin) and many more.
The signatures of approximately 150 rabbis!
