The Rif is famous mostly for the book before us (Hilchot Rav Alfas), a book of halachot that covers three sedarim of the shas, which were relevant during the period in which he was writing. He would copy and concentrate only on the things that he felt were relevant to halacha. Great rishonim like the Rambam, the Ra’avad, the Ramban, the Ri ba’al haTosfaot referred to him with great appreciation, and most of halakhic sages refer to him as the foremost authority on psikat halacha.
