The heads of the Yishuv feared that when the State will be established and the British will leave, they will take with them all the monetary reserves and there will be a severe shortage of convertible currency. Therefore, they applied to the Anglo-Palestine Bank, which operated in the country since 1920, and it secretly began to print Emergency Banknotes at Shoshani Print in Tel-Aviv. It was not printed on these banknotes that they were legal currency so that the bank will not break the law that was valid in the country during the Mandate.
The banknotes were printed at a face value of 500 mils, one lira, five liras and ten liras. They bore the name of the Anglo-Palestine Bank and were printed on one side of the page in a simple print.
The total value of the banknotes that had been printed was about 7,400,000 liras, an amount that was almost equal to the amount the bank had during this period in pounds, so that there will be a cover for the purpose of conversion to foreign currency if the need arises. However, these banknotes were not put in circulation, but were destroyed during September 1948, since the managers of the Anglo-Palestine Bank succeeded in convincing the 'American Banknote' Company to print other banknotes for them.
Since the Emergency Banknotes were not put in circulation, they are most rare.
Before us is a test print of a ten liras banknote.
Condition: Excellent. UNC
