Korney Chukovsky “Krokodil” illus. Remi, ed. M.V. Zaitsev, Harbin, 1920’s, Russian, Rare
M.V Zaitsev Printing house, 23 pp., Soft litho cover, 19 х 26.5 cm., Illustrated by Remi (Nikolai Vladimirovich Remizov)
Condition: Tear to top of spine and lower edges of cover; foxing stains throughout the book.
"Crocodile" Artist REMY. Zaitsev Publishing House, Harbin.
This book is interesting for the place of publication - the Russian émigré colony in Harbin. The publishing house of Mikhail Vasilievich Zaitsev (1901 - 1946) was founded in 1923. It ceased to exist - in 1942. Over the past decade, he has published over 150 books, mostly fiction. The first major order was the publication of children's fairy tales for Parisian publishers. The usual circulation of children's books was 1000 copies.
After the end of the Soviet-Japanese War and the establishment of a puppet pro-Soviet government in Northern Manchuria, Mikhail Vasilyevich shared the fate of many Russian emigrants who did not have time or did not want to move from Harbin to Shanghai. In 1946, he was arrested by SMERSH and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Obviously, he tragically died there.

The text of the poem from the first edition of 1919 is reproduced in the Harbin edition. The year of publication of the book is not indicated, but in terms of the style of design (the cover is enclosed in a colored blank frame), it resembles the design of the first children's books, which were mentioned above. Thus, the time of the appearance of Zaitsevsky "Crocodile" can be attributed to the second half of the 20s. In any case, it appeared earlier than the edition published in 1941 in the Soviet Detizdat. And if you look closely at the details, the illustrations prepared by Remizov for the emigre and Soviet editions are not identical.
The illustrations in the text also slightly differ from those used for the first edition.
20 May [O.S. 8 May] 1887 in Saint-Petersburg – 4 August 1975 in Riverside County), also known as Nicolai Remisoff, was a Russian and Russian and American artist, political cartoonist and art director of American cinema.[1][2] He worked a number of times one films directed by fellow Russian Gregory Ratoff. Before the 1917 Revolution he was the leading artist in russian satirical magazines Strekoza and Satirikon [ru], in which he published his cartoons under the pseudonym Re-Mi.
