Early handwritten Shtar Chalitzah. Germany, 1838]


Handwritten Shtar Chalitzah, for a wedding held in Germany on Elul 3, 1838, signed by the two brothers of the groom, and by the two community trustees in Baden.


Shtar Chalitzah is a document signed by the groom's brother and delivered to the bride at the time of the wedding. In the document, the brothers undertake to observe the mitzvah of  Chalitzah if their sister widowed without sons. In case the husband's brothers do not want to do a Chalitzah they commits a financial commitment to the anchor. Another document is known as a "Shtar Chalitzah" which was submitted by the court to "Yevama" as evidence that "Ybam" has did a Chalitzah.
