Leader of Jerusalem's Old Yishuv and founder of the Rabbi Meir Ba'al HaNess charity, the saintly R. Shmuel Salant was a dedicated and effective fundraiser for the various Kollels of Jerusalem.
A disciple of R. Akiva Eiger, R. Eliyahu Guttmacher (the Greidetzer Rav, 1796-1874) attracted throngs of pilgrims due to his mystic approach.
