Book “Yaffe Toar” on Midrash Rabbah, the book of Bereshit, by Rabbi Shmuel Yaffe Ashkenazi, Furth 1692. Catalogued as a rare book by the National Library. [1], 540 leaves, two title pages in the original, this copy is missing the first title page and last leaf.

New, handsome binding, gilded inscription, stains, title page and other pages have been repaired, overall good condition for a book of this age, very rare.

This book is a comprehensive commentary and most important to the Midrash, written by the rabbi for 25 years. His interpretation merited to be published across the Jewish people. The greatest members of all ages in the Diaspora and in Israel often learned it and reference it in their books frequently and established their interpretation in the comments.

The researcher Meir Benayahu writes that this book has probably been printed more than any other book in the history of printing, from the invention of the printing press to the present. The present copy is from the third and final edition, the last edition printed until today.

There are a number of stamps: “Moshe ben M’ David Strason”, with the symbol “M.S.D”. This is Rabbi Moshe Strason, brother-in-law of the Rashash of Vilna (author of the Hagahot on the Shas”.

A note on the title page reads “I the holy Zvi called Hirsch…[?], Avdak of Tat”—not checked thoroughly. Long handwritten note on leaf 108.
